Combat Submission Wrestling background informationCombat Submission Wrestling (CSW) has been a major influence at the McLeod Academy. It is a blend of various striking and grappling arts. It is a sport based system which teaches the student to move effectively from Kickboxing range to the Clinch range and to the Ground fighting range. Though the sporting element is emphasized, this art is very functional for Self Defence and Law Enforcement with many Military teams now learning this system. The techniques are geared towards Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Vale Tudo competition though it is not necessary for a student to compete to become efficient in this art. It must be made clear that although Vale Tudo translates as 'anything goes' in Portugese, it is not a true representation of what is taught or fought in MMA. The easiest way to describe MMA is to say it is a blend of all the Olympic combat sports, ie Tae Kwon Do (kicking), Boxing (punching), Greco Roman Wrestling, Freestyle Wrestling and Judo (grappling). In CSW, the stand up striking game is a mix of Muay Thai Boxing, French Savate and Jun Fan Kickboxing. The various striking arts give the practitioner a well versed knowledge of the striking game, seen from a variety of angles. The wrestling portion of CSW is a blend of Greco Roman Wrestling, Freestyle Wrestling, Catch-as-catch-can Wrestling, Judo, Sambo, Shooto, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Filipino Dumog. By having elements of various 'different' systems the student can see the similarities between apparently different cultures. A human being has only 2 arms and 2 legs so each country's system has to be similar. CSW is a modern day system which is similar to JKD in that it covers all empty hand ranges of combat and it blends, without prejudice, similar arts to reach a common goal.
